Dance and movement form a vital part of the spiritual and personal development path for many people. And, while there are plenty of options to choose from in the world of conscious, ecstatic or therapeutic dance, there’s only one form with its roots in developmental psychology.
Dance of Awareness (DoA) takes participants back through the earliest developmental stages of human life – the first five years. The form is based around a cycle of sensing, grounding, expressing, releasing, connecting and completing. This mirrors the body’s arrival into the world and the different developmental windows that make us who we are. Dance and movement help us understand ourselves directly, in ways that words cannot.
Body psychotherapists, Clare Osbond and Tim Brown have been working with DoA for over 20 years. We developed it in Brighton, and have recently moved to Devon, so we’re now offering it to the South West! This is where Body Psychotherapy meets Dance Movement Psychotherapy meets Authentic Movement.
Our early years are experienced directly through the body, which is the time we are developing a growing sense of self. We come in to the world and we physically ‘take shape’ through movement and contact. That’s why dance is such a powerful way of exploring our early experience therapeutically, by working with the body and movement. As old patterns are recovered or re-discovered, they come into conscious awareness making space for new ways of being and relating. The story is of the ego individuating as I differentiate into 'who I am'. But it is also the story of the evolution of consciousness, the story of ‘becoming’. I am becoming more than my ego as we move from instinctual (impulsive) through egoic (my sense of self) and toward transcendent.
Come and discover Dance of Awareness! In these workshops we will offer a mix of free movement and structured process work, with a focus on self-expression and exploration. After a warm-up, we will have an opening circle, followed by a Wave as we go through the DoA cycle. We begin in sensing, a space to surrender to your being - simply being with yourself and experiencing yourself directly. Then, in grounding we allow the ground and the breath to support us, and we become aware of our physicality, the form that we take. From our ground, we can come to know ourselves, to feel our feelings - this is expressing, and we can choose whether and how to express ourselves. As we meet our limitations and notice our holding patterns, releasing makes space for letting go. And then the freedom of connecting that comes with that. To connect in all that I am - both outwards to others, and inwards to my true nature. And finally a closing circle which is an opportunity to share if you are moved to do so.

It can be a deeply moving experience, exhilarating and fun. And because we’re working explicitly with early developmental patterns, the experience can often stay with participants, creating real change in their lives. It’s a big claim, but we’ve seen it happen!
It’s also possible to train in DoA – we’ve trained hundreds of people to work with this model over the years. If you’re interested, start your journey here by joining the next workshops. Our plan is to offer another training in 2026. This training is for anyone wishing to develop their skills working in non-verbal group settings – particularly movement work, group process, non-verbal communication, and conscious dance.
